On 3 November 2013 the time has come: at primetime (20:15) the first episode of the new Tatort Erfurt, 'Cold Angel', is broadcast on ARD. The youngest ever team of Tatort investigators is faced with the murder of a student here in the capital of the central German state of Thuringia. But the experienced duo of Detective Superintendent Henry Funck (Friedrich Mücke) and Chief Inspector Maik Schaffert (Benjamin Kramme) are not on their own any more: trainee prosecutor Johanna Grewel (Alina Levshin) has been foisted on them by the resolute Police Chief Petra Fritzenberger (Kirsten Block). At first the two detectives are far from happy with this situation – but they soon come to realise that there is much more to ‘the intern’ than meets the eye.

Tatort Erfurt is an FFP New Media production. The supervising producer is Michael Smeaton, the producer is Judith Smeaton, and this episode is directed by Tom Bohn, who also wrote the script. Meike Götz is the program executive for MDR.

A year ago the Central German Broadcaster MDR issued an open invitation for tenders to produce the new series of Tatort – the first time this has ever been done in the history of the long-running show. From more than 100 ideas submitted, FFP New Media was awarded the job. The broadcaster was convinced by the concept of setting the new series in Erfurt and bringing in a very young team.

The second episode of Tatort Erfurt will be produced in summer 2014.
